Is it worth it to keep writing songs? This is what the Klingon bard tlhev wonders, not surprisingly, through a song. The song compares three proverbs:
pagh mutlh bIQ neH mupbogh nuv'e' - The person who hammers only water builds nothing.
qoH vuvbe' SuS - The wind does not respect a fool.
qonlu' 'e' poQ QoQ - Music demands to be written.
The first is from our resident frog alien wImrew, who claims that 'IH bIQ mupmeH mIw'e', ramqu'mo' 'ej qeyqu'mo' ("The process of hitting the water is beautiful because it is insignificant and futile"). L'art pour l'art, I suppose?
The second is a Klingon proverb, related to us in the book Klingon for the Galactic Traveler, about a man from the ancient city of Quin'lat who insisted on staying outside during a storm, to make it respect him. The phrase ghaH vuv SuS neH ("He wants the wind to respect him") has come to be an idiomatic expression to say that someone is a fool.
Finally, the third phrase is hearkens somewhat back to the idea that the Klingon word for compose and record are the same (qon), as if the music already exists and the composer is merely recording it. Here, the music is further personified to be making a demand that it be recorded. This helps tlhev decide whether to continue her "fool's errand".
Personally I've been wondering whether to keep sharing these songs since tlhev has pretty much stopped bothering me these days. Either she was satisfied with the songs I had shared, or she gave up on me when I started putting so much time into Klingon podcasting instead. Well, I'll share the last few songs I have and we'll see how it goes!
